Wigan has two routes to and from Manchester - via Bolton and via Atherton. These two local services are currently operated with 30 carriages at peak times. The Department for Transport is committed to providing additional capacity on trains, adding extra carriages for peak services.
The TIF package will transform public transport facilities around Wigan Wallgate and Wigan North Western train stations. A high quality public transport interchange will be created, integrating both train stations and the bus facilities. Waiting areas for bus passengers, information for all transport users and links between the two train stations will be improved to high standards.
A glazed pedestrian walkway will also be built linking the two stations, pedestrians will be given greater priority, and Wallgate’s original canopy and facade will be restored.
Passengers will also benefit from refurbished stations at Atherton, Wallgate, Hindley, Ince, Pemberton, Bryn, Gathurst and Appley Bridge. The improvements will include improved shelters, CCTV, and real-time passenger information, all of which will lead to a far better travel experience for passengers.
The TIF funding package will allow for the delivery of a new station for Golborne, following further feasibility studies.
Real-time passenger information
The majority of stations will feature more security measures, including high quality CCTV. Constantly updated real-time information will tell passengers exactly when the next train is due.
